The Al Dhafra solar project is a revolutionary endeavor in renewable energy, featuring an impressive 2GW photovoltaic (PV) capacity. Situated in the Al Dhafra region of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), this ambitious independent power producer (IPP) project highlights the UAE’s dedication to sustainable energy. Extensive heavy machinery was employed to prepare the site, showcasing the country’s commitment to advanced, large-scale renewable energy solutions.

Project Overview and Ownership

Launched in 2020 and reaching operational status in June 2023, the Al Dhafra solar project is a key player in the UAE’s renewable energy landscape. This project operates under a public-private partnership (PPP) model and is a collaborative effort among several major entities. The ownership structure includes Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) with a 40% stake, Masdar with 20%, EDF Renewables holding another 20%, and Jinko Power contributing the final 20%.

Environmental Impact

One of the project's most notable achievements is its environmental contribution. By generating renewable energy, the Al Dhafra solar plant effectively reduces carbon emissions by more than 2.4 million tonnes annually. This reduction is equivalent to removing around 470,000 cars from the roads, significantly mitigating the environmental impact of conventional energy sources.

Alignment with UAE Energy Strategy

The Al Dhafra solar project aligns perfectly with the UAE Energy Strategy 2050. This strategic framework aims to boost the share of renewable energy in the country's energy mix from the current 25% to 50% by 2050. The project not only supports this goal but also highlights the UAE's leadership in embracing clean energy technologies.

Location and Construction

Situated roughly 35 kilometers south of Abu Dhabi, the Al Dhafra solar project covers an expansive area of about 20 square kilometers. This location was carefully selected for its optimal sunlight exposure, which is crucial for maximizing the efficiency of solar power generation.

The region is also home to the 1.17GW Sweihan solar photovoltaic power plant, now known as the Al Dhafra Solar PV1 plant, which ranks among the largest solar power installations globally. The construction of Al Dhafra Solar PV2 required extensive site preparation and heavy machinery to transform the vast desert landscape into a functional solar farm.

Site Preparation and Heavy Machinery

Site preparation for the Al Dhafra solar project was a significant undertaking. The process involved extensive land clearing, grading, and leveling to ensure a smooth and stable foundation for the installation of solar panels and associated infrastructure. Heavy machinery played a crucial role in these initial stages.

Bulldozers and excavators were used to clear and level the site, creating a flat and stable surface necessary for the large-scale deployment of solar PV modules. Graders were employed to ensure the precision of the terrain, allowing for optimal panel alignment and efficient water drainage, which is vital in desert conditions.

Additionally, earthmovers and compactors were used to prepare the ground for the installation of the mounting structures that support the solar panels. These machines facilitated the precise positioning and anchoring of the structures, which are essential for the stability and efficiency of the solar array.

Solar Technology and Efficiency

The Al Dhafra solar project utilizes four million bifacial solar PV modules from Jinko Solar. These modules are based on advanced crystalline technology and are designed to capture sunlight from both sides, enhancing overall energy yield. This bifacial technology represents a significant advancement in solar energy efficiency.

In January 2020, Jinko Solar’s bifacial modules achieved a world record for conversion efficiency, reaching 22.49%. These modules incorporate transparent back sheet technology and a fixed tilt angle of 30 degrees, which contributes to their high performance. The modules also feature anti-reflection coatings (ARC) and advanced metallization technologies, alongside the company's proprietary innovations.

The integration of new tiling ribbon (TR) technology into the cell design helps eliminate inter-cell gaps, improving module efficiency and reliability. This design innovation not only enhances the appearance of the modules but also contributes to reducing the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), making solar power more economically viable.

Power Purchase Agreement

In July 2020, the consortium of TAQA, Masdar, EDF, and Jinko Power secured a 30-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC). This agreement outlines the terms for selling the electricity generated by the plant, ensuring a stable and long-term revenue stream for the project's stakeholders.

Financing and Contractors

The financial backing for the Al Dhafra solar project was secured through a collaborative effort involving seven international banks. This financing was finalized in December 2020, following the PPA agreement.

China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) was the primary engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for the project. CMEC oversaw the entire construction process, including the integration of essential infrastructure such as inverters and transmission connections.

Hitachi Energy, engaged by CMEC in September 2021, provided critical components such as GSU transformers, protection systems, and telecommunication systems. Additionally, ABB contributed automation and optimization solutions to enhance the project's operational efficiency.

Battery Storage and Future Expansion

The Al Dhafra solar project also includes an option to expand its energy storage capabilities. Currently, there is a 108MW battery storage system operational in Abu Dhabi, which could potentially be expanded to support the solar plant further. This added capacity would improve grid stability and provide additional backup power, enhancing the overall reliability of the renewable energy supply.

 

The Al Dhafra solar project stands as a landmark achievement in the UAE’s renewable energy sector. Through innovative technology, substantial investment, and effective collaboration, it exemplifies the country's dedication to sustainable energy solutions. The project's integration of advanced solar technologies and significant site preparation highlights its role as a model for future large-scale solar initiatives.
