Auto Differential Lock, Advanced Technology Features, and Remote Capabilities Streamline Operations for Cat's 950-982 Wheel Loader Series

Caterpillar has upgraded its medium wheel loader models, ranging from the 950 to the 982, with new features like an auto differential lock and various technology enhancements. These updates apply to all models in this range, including the XE versions.

The auto front differential lock activates automatically to regain or maintain traction and is available on the 950 to 972 models with joystick steering and on the 966 to 972 models with steering wheel (HMU) steering systems.

A new engine RPM deceleration feature allows for smoother engagement and disengagement, working in tandem with the integrated brake system (IBS) pedal.

Interested in a wheel loader? These loaders now come with advanced technologies for easier operation, while manufacturers also explore alternative power sources. If you're in the market, it's important to know how to size a wheel loader correctly. Plus, a look back at historical equipment reveals the evolution of large loaders since the 1950s.

On the tech side, Caterpillar's medium wheel loaders feature a standard job-aid widget designed to assist the operator with load-and-carry tasks by automatically positioning the bucket at the optimal height for stability and material retention. This tool is now integrated with the work tool center, allowing for customized zero-angle settings for various attachments and tools.

Three programmable buttons on the implement control panel offer quick access to frequently used functions, improving efficiency. Operators can choose from over 25 functions to customize their settings.

For the Cat 966 XE, 972 XE (pictured), 980 XE, and 982 XE models, two new settings in application profiles let operators customize forward/reverse speed ranges and rimpull limits. These settings are now displayed on the front dash for easy reference, while site-specific limits are also visible on the operator settings screen.

Additional features include Cat Payload, now visible on the onboard display, and optional e-Ticketing, which can send electronic load tickets to pre-programmed email addresses within seconds, reducing the need for paper tickets in the cab.

Caterpillar's Remote Flash and Remote Troubleshooting are now standard across these models, allowing software updates to be installed directly from the onboard display. Expanded dealer remote troubleshooting includes machine usage data and system calibrations. Preventive maintenance intervals can now sync with VisionLink, displaying due-time reminders and overdue notifications directly on the operator's screen.
